Globalization and the intensification of migration favor intercultural exchanges, leading each to confront the other. While it is true that migration can lead to obstacles and tensions, it also presents many opportunities for development.

Growing up in the mix

The cultural intermingling of adolescents requires a double integration of the benchmarks specific to each world, a more or less good knowledge of the implicit rules that govern the two cultural systems and the creation of a new mixed system. This mixture is fragile, but it can become enriching when the two cultural poles are recognized and accepted by the individual and by those around him, which is far from being evident in adolescence, a period of identity building. We can see that these French teenagers, whose parents come from elsewhere, have no choice but to deal with these different worlds within them.

This video can explain it more:

Young immigrants are built on a plurality of cultural references and recognize themselves both in the values of French society that they have internalized through school, friends and the neighborhood, and in family values. This double cultural reference creates psychic tension that they will try to reduce by putting in place processes of adaptation. Between openness and closure, assimilation and differentiation, each one is defined on the basis of this in-between, which can in fact refer neither to French culture, nor to that of its origins, but a new culture that will be the product of the plural cultures in which they have evolved.

The story, the transmission: a condition of identity construction

It is in the shared experience and in the discourse of parents that identity and family belonging are built. The story then becomes a means of transmission. However, the history of the migratory journey can be so painful that some routes are kept silent, hidden. To transmit one’s history is to give information, awaken memories, and revive emotions. When this family story is not transmitted between those who have left and those who were born in the host country, we can hypothesize that the construction of identity and the sense of belonging of the younger generations are undermined. It is a factor of vulnerability that can lead them to connect to a «wild, urban culture» and to cobbled identities.

Confrontation with a person of a different culture necessarily leads us to question our own identity and that of the other, but also to question our relationship to otherness. This produces reactions of fear, rejection, or tension, or on the contrary an opening to the other.

The term mother culture refers to all the material and symbolic elements of our native country/region. It is especially meaningful for people who have moved to another country and whose current culture is not the one in which they grew up. I often use this expression in relation to the bilingual and bicultural education of our children. We, the parents who have chosen our country of adoption, have a different maternal culture than our children born in our second country. Except that, to a certain extent, our mother culture is part of their culture. Through or because of us

Understanding the parent and approaching the family

Our mother culture becomes their minority culture for our children. As opposed to their majority culture: the culture that surrounds them outside the family home, in reference to the majority language. It is the link between them and their history, moreover, it is part of their roots. The parent’s maternal culture allows the children to approach him/her more closely, to understand his/her identity, to grasp the cultural, social and emotional subtleties that inhabit him/her.

This video can explain it :

From there, a transmission can take place: the child is ready to appropriate this culture, since, thanks to his parent, it is part of his heritage. He integrates it into his own identity, which is still being constructed. Apart from his close relative mother or father, the minority culture allows the child to create a strong and lasting bond with his family abroad. Through culture and language, they acquire a sense of belonging to a second community, sharing common codes and values.

The child’s emotional development

Our mother culture, like every culture, is a vector of emotions. Emotions aroused by stories, traditions, songs, music, characters, past events… what a richness for our children! Bathing in two cultures, being exposed to these diverse influences contributes to their emotional development to the highest degree. The children’s inner life becomes particularly rich, their sensitivity deepens and matures. We accompany the development of multicultural people on a daily basis and are aware of the importance of culture in human life.

Contact with several cultures broadens our child’s horizons. If, in addition, it is his own culture thanks to his parent, the benefit is double since the child easily attributes an affective value to it generally positive. His view of the world becomes broader and more open because he has several filters to analyze reality. His cultures provide him with precious reference points according to which there are several points of view at least two, several ways of doing things without hierarchy between them. This is an extraordinary richness that contributes to making our societies more respectful of differences and less Manichean.

The proper functioning of an organization depends on the quality of the relationships within it. This truth is exacerbated in multinational companies as well as in structures that have to collaborate with foreign suppliers or partners. In this case, the management of interculturality represents important economic stakes and must be considered as a problem in its own right. The global operating mode must adapt to this specificity by adopting intercultural management and intercultural communication. In the event of difficulties, tensions or conflicts, it may sometimes be necessary to involve an intercultural mediator.

The different facets of interculturality

Having different cultures means from time to time having a different vision of the world. However, it also means having a specific body language, a way of expressing or not expressing certain things or a particular attitude towards complex situations, tensions and conflicts. Interculturality implies thinking about all these innate behaviors and evaluating their impact on a person from another culture to make professional exchanges more fluid and facilitate collaboration.

This video can explain it:

What is intercultural communication? Communication is a fundamental concept of interculturality. It is about two individuals from different cultures adopting an attitude, a vocabulary and an approach to communication that adapts to the other person in order to facilitate exchanges and avoid misunderstandings. In case of deep-rooted communication problems, intercultural mediation can be a solution. It refers to the fact of intervening between two people of different cultures to facilitate the transmission of knowledge and exchanges. The intercultural mediator has the linguistic and cultural skills and knowledge to facilitate exchanges.

What is intercultural management?

Intercultural management is an essential concept in companies that deal with different cultures. The increasing mobility and globalization of economies make this concept an omnipresent issue in today’s business life. Although exchanges have intensified, this has not reduced cultural barriers. Large international companies sometimes see their performance reduced because of poor management of interculturality. This is where we see the importance of introducing an intercultural management approach to make the most of each culture and to ensure a lasting collaboration between employees from different backgrounds.

By implementing an intercultural management approach in your company, you will be able to adopt the right posture in the context of exchanges involving interculturality. We can take the example of a partnership, a merger, the acquisition of an international subsidiary, internal exchanges with entities in other countries… All professionals with international responsibilities are concerned by the issue of intercultural management.

Cultural exchanges of practices and experiences in all fields have made their way in foreign affairs, commerce, education and psychology. There is talk in the media about the integration of refugees, in the sciences of education the successful adaptation of immigrants and their children, in acculturation psychology. If sociology describes exchanges between cultures, in the sciences of management and management we insist on intercultural management to better manage teams multicultural, negotiation, expatriation. Coupland et al. point out that the globalization, an already existing phenomenon that is increasing at an exponential rate, implies a greater degree of interdependence, as we become more dependent on each other and influence each other.

CHALLENGES AND ISSUES OF RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF INTERCULTURAL REDESIGNED

This part presents the conceptual framework of our research, in particular it explains the contexts socio-cultural and theoretical factors that gave rise to our research. This part consists of three chapters and sections. First of all, let us specify that our work aims to reflect on a possibility assess intercultural competence and, therefore, falls within the field of management sciences and management. In the first chapter, we discuss societal trends that concern three elements: the society and its changes in cultural presentations, organization and its approach in the search for human capital and the individual with new demands and motivations. We present also the history of intercultural research in management sciences and management and the role of the intercultural approach in international work.

This video explain it:

This chapter allows us to review the concept of interculturality which becomes an inevitable space for everyone and explain the necessary return to this subject in management and management sciences. In the second chapter we will explain the choice of the term “intercultural competence. We also present the layers of intercultural competence which will help to build a model explicit: categories individual level, mechanisms components and dimensions. look at the life cycle of a skill and adapt it according to the layers of CI. We will also talk about the development of the dynamism of the notion of culture. Every culture requires inclusion and social cohesion to the people who bathe inside it; these processes allow the intercultural competence to be practiced.

Cross-cultural research context

To introduce our topic, this chapter focuses on societal trends that affect the place of Culture. The latter has produced, with the help of globalization, monocultural, bicultural spaces, transcultural, multicultural and intercultural to live and work there. To This end we present the story intercultural management which is based on diversity management practices, team enhancement multiculturalism and the search for the skills necessary for interculturality. We show that the approaches in intercultural management have been evolved under the new angle of the vision of culture and cultural differences .

Biculturalism plays an essential role in the intellectual and personal development of an individual from childhood. With globalization, new generations are increasingly multicultural. Every year at Christmas, the children receive the same type of gifts under their tree. Cars remote-controlled, dolls, disguises…

However, there is a gift that is never spoken of, which will be much more useful to them and which is more and more fashionable: biculturalism.

Today, more and more children are born with this present that they inherited from their parents. This is a gift of globalization. With the migrations population constants, we are witnessing more and more to matrimonial unions between persons from different cultures. Children born from these unions then come into the world and grow steeped in the culture of both mom and dad.

Ease of assimilation

This implicit passport allows the children concerned to be bilingual from an early age. This will allow them subsequently, in particular during their studies, to justify an excellent linguistic level but also of an ease assimilation of foreign languages greater than the average. For example, it is much easier for a child born from the mixture of French cultures and Portuguese to learn other Latin languages than for a child whose two parents would be French.

This video share this experience :

The bicultural child also has the opportunity to spend holidays with his paternal family and in his maternal family. Usually, one of the two families living abroad, this is an opportunity for him to travel general at least once a year. So he discovers each trip one of his two cultures. Beyond of the discovery and improvement of the aspect language, the child can discover up close, on the field, the socio-cultural aspect.

The dexterity of a chameleon

This aspect is very important for the development of the child. He will give it characteristics such as greater open-mindedness and also an ability to switch between languages and a culture with the dexterity of a chameleon. Finally, thanks to all this experience, the child bicultural develops while growing an incredible ability to adapt to foreign cultures.

Moreover, even when it comes to cultures that don’t know, it doesn’t cause him any problems because, the adaptation mechanism, he knows it not only from an early age but he masters it also perfectly. We can ask ourselves if, in the long run, we will not witness the birth of citizens from of such a cultural mix, of more than 2 cultures in within their family, that they will no longer be considered as bicultural but rather as citizens of the world, quite simply.

In the era of globalization, multilingualism is greatly favored; the increase in flows migration and social interactions promotes effective learning languages and a transformation of social relations.

What are the advantages of bilingualism?

In the long term, many studies have shown that bilingualism was an unfavorable ground for Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, the acquisition of two or more languages allows better cognitive development i.e. everything related executive functions (what men only have animals do not have), memory, language, reasoning, learning, intelligence, resolution problem and attention.

What are the rules to respect?

The child must have fun to learn their languages, learning should be fun. Then there is the circuit of their ward, as and when his apprenticeship he will be more able to interact with others, this interaction will be seen as a reward in his eyes. We also talk about context harmonious; the environment must be conducive to learning.

Regular training is necessary; the child must practice their languages daily and equally. The proximity of languages is also an advantage, it is indeed easier to learn two languages if these two languages are languages opaque a sound corresponds to several letters.

Easy of assimilation

This implicit passport allows the children concerned to be bilingual from an early age. Dad their speak in her mother tongue and mom in the hips. The bicultural child also has the opportunity to spend holidays with his paternal family and in his mother’s family.

Some events are dictated by a religion, others by a socio-cultural context and still others are simply imposed by nature. But do we all have to celebrate and how? It seems that according to cultures, the relationship to the different significant events of a life is not the same. Death can even take on more importance than life. In some cases, a birthday will be an opportunity to get together with the people you love, while in others, it’s a day that doesn’t deserve so much attention…
