Relocating to France offers American expatriates a wealth of cultural experiences and lifestyle changes. However, adapting to new living spaces and managing personal belongings can present challenges. Self-storage solutions have become increasingly popular among expats for their flexibility and convenience.

Benefits of self-storage for American expats

1. Flexibility during transition periods

Moving to France often involves temporary accommodations before settling into a permanent residence. Self-storage provides a secure place to keep belongings during this transition, allowing expats to move at their own pace without the stress of immediate unpacking.

2. Adapting to smaller living spaces

French homes, particularly in urban areas, tend to be smaller than typical American residences. Self-storage offers a solution for items that may not fit in the new living space but are still valuable or needed seasonally, such as sports equipment or holiday decorations.

3. Secure storage for valuables

Self-storage facilities in France are equipped with advanced security features, including 24/7 surveillance and controlled access. This ensures that personal belongings, important documents, and valuable items are kept safe, providing peace of mind for expats.

4. Cost-effective solution

Renting a larger apartment solely for storage purposes can be expensive. Self-storage units offer a more economical alternative, with various sizes available to suit different needs and budgets.

5. Simplifying international moves

Coordinating international shipping and moving logistics can be complex. Utilizing self-storage allows expats to ship items ahead of time and retrieve them when convenient, streamlining the moving process.

6. Supporting business and remote work needs

For expats running businesses or working remotely, self-storage can serve as an extension of the home office. It provides space for inventory, equipment, or documents, keeping the living area uncluttered and organized.

7. Preserving sentimental and irreplaceable Items

For many expatriates, certain belongings hold deep sentimental value—family heirlooms, personal mementos, or collections that represent cherished memories. Relocating to France doesn’t always allow for these items to be immediately accommodated in new living spaces. Self-storage facilities offer a secure and climate-controlled environment to preserve these irreplaceable possessions. By safeguarding such items, expats can maintain a tangible connection to their heritage and personal history, ensuring that these treasures remain intact and accessible for future generations.

Choosing the right self-storage facility

When selecting a self-storage facility in France, consider the following factors:

Location: Proximity to your residence for easy access.

Security: Facilities with robust security measures.

Accessibility: Flexible access hours to suit your schedule.

Climate Control: Necessary for sensitive items.

Contract Terms: Flexible rental agreements without long-term commitments.

By carefully evaluating these aspects, expats can find a self-storage solution that complements their lifestyle and meets their specific needs while living in France.

Bringing snacks, water, or dietary items in your carry-on bag for the plane is very important, especially for comfort, health, and energy during your journey. Flights can be long, and sometimes airline food may not be enough or may not suit your dietary needs. Let’s explore why you should pack these items, and how to do it in a simple and smart way.

Snacks help you stay full

Airline meals are often small and served at specific times. If you’re hungry before or after those meals, it may be hard to get more food. Having your own snacks helps prevent hunger during the flight. This is especially helpful if you’re traveling with children, who may get hungry more often. Good snack options include: Granola bars, Nuts and dried fruits, Crackers or pretzels and Fresh fruit. Just remember to pack food that doesn’t spoil easily and doesn’t have a strong smell, out of respect for other passengers.

Water Is Essential

Staying hydrated on a flight is very important. The air in airplane cabins is very dry, which can make you dehydrated quickly. Dehydration can cause headaches, dry skin, and tiredness. While flight attendants usually offer drinks, you might not get enough water that way. It’s a good idea to bring your own refillable water bottle.

This video can explain it more:

You can’t bring a full bottle of water through airport security, but you can bring an empty bottle and fill it up after passing through security checkpoints. Most airports have water fountains or filling stations.

Dietary Needs and Restrictions

If you have any dietary restrictions, like being vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or having food allergies, it’s smart to bring your own food. Airline meals may not always offer the right options or may not be safe for you. Even if you order a special meal, it might not be available or could get mixed up. By packing your own food, you can be sure you’re eating something safe and healthy for your body. Choose items that are high in protein, not too messy, and easy to carry.

Saving Money and Time

Airport food is often expensive and not always healthy. By bringing your own snacks and a water bottle, you save money and avoid having to wait in long lines at airport shops or restaurants.

In short, packing snacks, water, and dietary items in your carry-on is a smart and simple way to stay healthy, comfortable, and prepared while traveling by plane. It gives you control over what you eat and helps make your flight more enjoyable.

Social norms can vary widely across different cultures and communities because they are shaped by the unique values, beliefs, traditions, and historical contexts of each society. While all societies have social norms that guide behavior, what is considered normal in one culture may be seen as unusual or even unacceptable in another?

Attitudes toward Authority and Hierarchy

Social norms regarding authority and hierarchy can differ significantly. For example, in cultures that emphasize respect for authority such as in many East Asian cultures, social norms may dictate a more formal relationship between subordinates and superiors. People may bow, use honorifics, or defer to elders or authority figures. In contrast, cultures with a more egalitarian approach may have norms that emphasize more casual, equal relationships across all levels of society, including in workplaces or between elders and younger people.

Religion and Spiritual Practices and Rites of Passage

Religious beliefs and practices heavily influence social norms, especially in cultures where religion plays a central role in daily life. For example, in predominantly Muslimcountries, there are social norms surrounding daily prayers, fasting during Ramadan, and modest dress codes. In contrast, in Christian or secular societies, such norms may not be as strictly enforced or may be less central to everyday behavior.

This video can explain it more:

Social norms related to rites of passage, such as birth, marriage, and death, can also vary. In some cultures, arranged marriagesare a common social norm, while in others, love marriages based on individual choice are more typical. Similarly, norms around mourning and funeral practices can differ dramatically, with some cultures holding elaborate ceremonies and others keeping things more private or restrained.

Time and Punctuality and Gender Roles

Social norms around the concept of time can differ as well. In Western cultures, being on time for meetings, events, or appointments is often considered a sign of professionalism and respect. However, in some Latin Americanand African cultures, a more flexible approach to time is common, and being late may not carry the same negative social stigma.

Social norms related to gender roles can vary greatly between cultures. In some societies, strict gender roles are enforced, with norms that clearly define the behaviors, responsibilities, and expectations for men and women. For example, in many traditional cultures, women may be expected to prioritize family roles, while men may be expected to be the primary breadwinners.

However, in other cultures, there may be greater gender equality, and the norms allow for more fluidity in gender roles. In many Western societies, norms have evolved to encourage shared responsibilities between men and women in areas like parenting, work, and decision-making.

In recent years, Turkey has transformed into a vibrant hub for health tourism, captivating the attention of individuals seeking high-quality medical treatments at competitive prices. With its rich history, stunning landscapes, and a healthcare system that rivals those in Western countries, Turkey offers an irresistible combination for patients looking to enhance their well-being while enjoying a unique travel experience. From advanced cosmetic surgeries to innovative hair transplant techniques, including the renowned ARTAS robotic system, Turkey has become synonymous with cutting-edge healthcare solutions.

The emergence of health tourism in turkey

In recent years, Turkey has established itself as a prominent hub for health tourism, drawing patients from around the globe. The country offers an appealing blend of high-quality medical services and competitive pricing, making it an attractive option for those in need of various medical treatments. Estimates suggest that around 750,000 people travel to Turkey annually for medical care, benefiting from state-of-the-art facilities and internationally accredited healthcare professionals. This surge can be attributed to Turkey’s commitment to enhancing its healthcare system through significant investments in technology and infrastructure.

The Turkish government has actively supported the health tourism sector by implementing regulations that ensure quality and safety in medical services. The Ministry of Health oversees the accreditation of hospitals and clinics, ensuring they adhere to international standards. This regulatory framework not only enhances patient safety but also instills confidence among international patients seeking treatment in Turkey. Consequently, many healthcare facilities have achieved international accreditation, further solidifying Turkey’s reputation as a safe and reliable destination for medical care.

High-quality medical facilities

One of the primary reasons patients choose Turkey for health tourism is the quality of its medical facilities. The country is home to numerous modern hospitals equipped with cutting-edge technology and staffed by highly trained medical professionals. Many Turkish hospitals have received accreditation from esteemed international organizations, guaranteeing adherence to rigorous quality standards. Patients can expect access to advanced diagnostic tools and surgical equipment that rival those found in Western countries.

Moreover, Turkish healthcare providers are known for their expertise across various specialties, including cosmetic surgery, dental care, and orthopedics. This diversity allows patients to find tailored treatments that meet their specific health needs. For instance, Turkey has gained recognition for its hair transplant procedures, particularly with the advent of robotic systems like ARTAS, which enhance precision and efficiency during surgeries. Additionally, many clinics offer complementary treatments such as keratin therapies that help improve hair texture and health post-transplant. This comprehensive approach ensures that patients achieve optimal outcomes with minimal discomfort.

Cost-effective treatments

Another significant factor driving health tourism to Turkey is the cost-effectiveness of medical treatments. Procedures in Turkey can be up to 90% less expensive than similar treatments in Europe or North America without compromising quality. This affordability is particularly appealing for patients seeking elective surgeries or cosmetic procedures that may not be covered by insurance in their home countries.

The favorable exchange rate between the Turkish Lira and major currencies further enhances the attractiveness of medical tourism in Turkey. Many patients find that they can receive high-quality care while also enjoying a vacation experience at a fraction of the cost they would incur at home. This combination of affordability and quality makes Turkey an ideal destination for those looking to improve their health while also exploring a rich cultural landscape.

Technological advancements and innovations

Turkey’s healthcare sector has embraced technological advancements that contribute to its appeal as a medical tourism destination. The introduction of robotic systems like ARTAS for hair transplantation exemplifies this trend. ARTAS utilizes advanced imaging techniques and artificial intelligence to assist surgeons in performing precise hair transplants with minimal invasiveness. This innovation not only improves patient outcomes but also reduces recovery times.

Furthermore, Turkish hospitals continually invest in new technologies and training for their staff to stay at the forefront of global healthcare trends. This commitment to innovation ensures that patients receive cutting-edge treatments that may not be available elsewhere. As a result, Turkey has become a leader in various medical fields, including cosmetic surgery and fertility treatments.

An enriching cultural experience

Beyond healthcare services, Turkey offers a rich cultural experience that enhances the appeal of health tourism. Patients traveling for medical treatments often take advantage of their time in the country to explore historical sites, enjoy local cuisine, and immerse themselves in Turkish culture. Major cities like Istanbul and Antalya provide picturesque settings for recovery, allowing patients to relax and rejuvenate after their procedures.

The combination of high-quality medical care and vibrant cultural experiences makes Turkey an attractive destination for health tourists. Many clinics even offer packages that include accommodations and transportation services, ensuring a seamless experience from arrival to departure. This holistic approach not only addresses patients’ health needs but also enriches their overall travel experience.

Many people dream of living abroad, and with good reason! It’s the opportunity to be immersed in a world completely different from the one we know and have grown up in. Who doesn’t want to travel to new lands, discover trails and landscapes previously unknown to us, and taste local recipes and foods whose names we don’t even know? As adults, we’re plunged back into a world where we’ve only seen the surface.

How to make friends: immersion efforts

That’s right! It may seem obvious to many, but learning the local language helps enormously, and yet it’s not always the norm. In the eyes of the locals, a foreigner who speaks the language is seen as a pleasant surprise, sometimes even a form of expected respect, depending on the country. Even if the language level is far from perfect, locals are often touched by the efforts of expatriates wishing to integrate into their culture and customs. What’s more, many locals speak only the local language: in other words, the better your language skills, the more opportunities you’ll have to talk to and make friends with the locals!

This video can explain it more:

It’s also a good idea to find out about cultural norms, and even more specifically, politeness standards, to avoid making a bad first impression. These standards can vary enormously from one country to another. For example, while in France it’s impolite to eat soup noisily, in Japan it’s quite common to make a noise by sucking up your noodles. Another well-known example is the French kiss, which in most other countries is perceived as too invasive and intimate. In general, it’s a good idea to find out how to say hello in different countries. It can be a hand on the shoulder, a hug, a kiss, bowing while keeping your distance… Different greetings exist for different social contexts.

Social networks at your service

Sometimes it’s hard to go out without knowing anyone, for the shyer among us… or not knowing where to start making friends. In these cases, Facebook groups can be a good first approach to the problem. All it takes is a few key words in the search bar, using city and nationality. It’s very easy to find expatriate groups on these networks, not only for sharing advice, but also for organizing activities, outings and making friends. This can be between expatriates exclusively, or in immersion with locals, depending on your wishes. In addition to social networks, some organizations are entirely dedicated to networking.

However, if you don’t want to meet people in a group, or prefer to start a discussion before meeting people, dating apps such as Tinder, Hinge, Meet up can also be used to make friends. It’s also common to use language exchange apps in the same way as dating apps, whether romantic or friendly, with the advantage of practicing and progressing in the local language.

We’re so used to celebrating New Year’s Eve that we don’t really know why we do it anymore. Your child, on the other hand, would like to know why we all celebrate at this time. Say, Mom, why are we celebrating on December 31st? You’d think that is why period would be over. In fact, no, she still has a lot of questions to answer. Here’s a cheat sheet to answer all your toddler’s questions!

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE NEW YEAR’S EVE?

Wherever and whenever it’s celebrated, New Year’s Eve is always a special time of year. Even today, it’s a time to celebrate, to eat something out of the ordinary, to dress up, to give presents. But after all, why is it so important? Starting a New Year means starting afresh, trying to do better than the year before. We make good resolutions, we wish our loved ones well. It’s all a bit superstitious. We think that all these rituals are a way of giving a beneficial direction to the next twelve months. The hope is that by wishing for happiness, health and prosperity, we’ll attract good luck and ward off bad luck. Magic is never far away.

This video can explain it more:

Why does the year start on January 1? That’s another question your toddler might ask you. He’d be right to be interested, because January 1st hasn’t always been the first day of the year. In France, it was only in 1564 that the year began on this day. Before that, in much of the Christian world, the first day of the year was the day of the Annunciation, March 25. On this day, Mary learned that she would become the mother of Jesus nine months later, on December 25. However, the March 25 date was not adopted by everyone. In some regions, people preferred to start the year on Christmas Day. In others, Easter Day.

French Revolution and revolutionary calendar

The French Revolution resulted in the advent of the First Republic in 1792. France entered a new era on September 22, 1792, which became 1st Vendemiaire, Year I. The revolutionary calendar replaced the Gregorian calendar. The year begins on the autumnal equinox, when day and night have the same duration. Depending on the year, this is September 22, 23 or 24. The date is set by decree each year. This calendar, adopted only in France, is very complicated to use. In 1805, under Napoleon I, France reverted to the Gregorian calendar.

More and more people are leaving for long periods abroad, whether for a mode slow travel holiday or a warm telework during the winter. Unlike a short stay, going for a long time involves preparing well. We do not pack in 24 hours, we take the time to plan this fact we will need for several weeks. Here are the things to do before traveling for a long time.

Going on a trip: health

Check that you are up to date in your vaccines and, if not, renew them. Check the list of diseases present in the visited country against which you must be protected on the Canadian government website. Do not do it at the last minute! You must make an appointment with a travel clinic or your doctor. Some doses of vaccines or medicines should also be taken several days or even weeks before departure. Are you well covered not your travel insurance? Take the time to take a look at your contract and validate that you are covered according to the activities you will practice and especially, according to the duration of your trip. If the insurance jargon is not clear to you, take the time to call an agent to validate if your needs are included in your coverage.

This video can explain it more:

You should also think about renewing your prescriptions before leaving for the duration of your stay. Do not find yourself badly taken and out of medicines once on site! Depending on the destination, it may be difficult to find your prescriptions at the local pharmacy.

Prepare a card in case of an accident that you will always keep with you. You will find essential information about yourself: blood type, emergency contact person, known allergies, etc. If you are travelling with a friend, colleague, or family member, give them this information that could be useful.

What to put in your suitcase

It is generally recommended to leave with clothes for 10 to 12 days, then it will be necessary to wash which is rarely a problem at destination. If you go to a sun destination, consider bringing everything you can’t find on site or that will be more expensive. Sunscreen, hat, sandals, swimsuits, shorts, camisoles, and snorkeling mask if you plan to do so. For colder destinations, avoid overloading your suitcase with heavy clothing. Think of the layered system by bringing one or two warm sweaters, and several sweaters to put under them. A single coat should suffice unless you go on a big expedition. For shoes, limit yourself to 3 pairs: one cleaner for evenings, one for sports activities and the last for the beach or more relaxed days.

The place of religion in the lives of people residing in France is often the subject of untruths in the public debate. Hence the interest of the INSEE study on religious diversity in France published this Thursday, especially since the issue rarely dealt with by public statistics. According to this, Catholicism remains the first religion declared in our country in 2019-2020 claimed by 29% of 18 to 59 year olds, followed by Islam 10%. The proportion of people declaring themselves to be of another Protestant or Orthodox Christian religion reaches 9%. However, 51% of people living in France say they are without religion whereas they were only 45% ten years ago.

Only 8% of Catholics visit the Church regularly

But who says believer, does not necessarily say regular practitioner. Respect for dogma indeed differs a lot from one religion to another. According to the INSEE, 8% of Catholics regularly visit the Church, compared to 22% of other Protestant Orthodox Christians. Among Catholics, religious holidays, apart from Christmas and Easter, have lost their unifying role, observes Patrick Simon. Catholic immigrants are almost an exception: 55% of immigrants from Central Africa regularly attend mass.

This video can explain it more:

Attendance at a place of worship is much more intense among Jews, 34% of whom often go to the synagogue, Muslims and Buddhists, who are respectively 20% to go to a mosque or temple. We observe that there is no automaticity in the fact of attending a place of worship and even that there is a growing privatization of religious practice, emphasizes Patrick Simon. The collective practices of salvation religions are collapsing in favor of individual identity religions.

Transmission, a family affair

And if one was raised in a believing family, it is not for that reason that one will claim the religion of his elders. Admittedly, 91% of people raised in a Muslim family married the religion of their parents. This transmission is also very strong among Jews (84%). But Christian families transmit their religion less: 67% of people raised by Catholic parents and 69% by parents of other Christian denominations claim the same religion. “Levels of transmission are much lower when both parents have different religions: 57% of people who grew up in a mixed family do not take the religion of one of their parents,” says Simon. Exciting data to understand how our country is evolving.

Moving to the United States from Africa can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but also a challenging one. There are many things to consider before you pack your bags and board the plane, such as obtaining legal permission and finding a place to live.

This another tips in video :

Obtaining Legal Permission to Enter the US

The first step to moving to the US is to get a visa or a green card that allows you to live and work in the country legally. There are different types of visas and green cards depending on your situation and purpose of moving. Some of the most common ways to obtain legal permission are:

Employer sponsorship: If you have a US employer who wants to hire you, they can file a petition with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on your behalf. This can allow you to stay permanently in the US with a green card, or temporarily with a work visa.

Family sponsorship: If you have a close relative who is a US citizen or a permanent resident, they can file a petition with USCIS on your behalf. This can allow you to stay permanently in the US with a green card, or temporarily with a family visa. The waiting time and availability of visas depend on your relationship and country of origin.

Diversity visa lottery: If you are from a country with low rates of immigration to the US, you can enter the annual diversity visa lottery, which randomly selects 50,000 applicants for green cards. You need to meet some basic education and work requirements, and apply online during the specified period.

Student visa: If you want to study in the US, you can apply for a student visa that allows you to enroll in an accredited educational institution. You need to have an acceptance letter from the school, proof of financial support, and academic records. A student visa does not allow you to work in the US, unless it is related to your studies or authorized by USCIS.

Finding a Place to Stay in the US

Once you have your visa or green card, you need to find a place to live in the US. Depending on your budget, preferences, and location, you have several options:

Renting an apartment or a house: This is the most common option for newcomers who want to have their own space and privacy. You can search for rental listings online, through newspapers, or through real estate agents. You will need to sign a lease agreement, pay a security deposit, and provide proof of income and identity. The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the US is $1,098 per month, but it varies widely by state and city.

Sharing an apartment or a house: This is a cheaper option for newcomers who don’t mind living with other people. You can find roommates online, through friends, or through community organizations. You will need to agree on the rent, utilities, rules, and responsibilities with your roommates. The average rent for a room in the US is $600 per month, but it also depends on the location and quality of the place.

Staying with family or friends: This is a convenient option for newcomers who have relatives or acquaintances in the US who are willing to host them. You will need to respect their rules and expectations, and contribute to their household expenses if possible. Staying with family or friends can help you save money and adjust to the new environment more easily.

Using africallshop.com: This is an innovative option for newcomers who want to stay connected with their loved ones in Africa while living in the US. africallshop.com is a platform with mobile applications that allows you to make international calls to Africa at low rates. You can download the app for free, create an account, and start calling your family and friends anytime, anywhere.
