Individuals can challenge or change harmful social norms in several ways, often by questioning established practices, raising awareness, and encouraging others to adopt new perspectives.

Open Dialogue

Engaging in respectful conversations with others is another way to challenge harmful norms. When people have open discussions about topics like body image, mental health, or gender roles, they can challenge misconceptions and promote alternative ways of thinking. Sharing personal stories can also make people more empathetic and open to change.

This video can explain it more:

Education and Awareness and Leading by Example

One of the first steps to challenging harmful social norms is through education. By learning about the negative impacts of certain norms, individuals can help others understand how these norms perpetuate inequality, discrimination, or harm. For example, educating people about gender stereotypes or racism can help others see how these norms negatively affect individuals and communities.

Individuals can change social norms by modeling the behavior they wish to see. For instance, if a person refuses to participate in harmful practices like bullying or discriminatory jokes, they send a message that such behavior is not acceptable. Over time, others may adopt similar attitudes, especially if they see respected individuals taking a stand.

Support for Diverse Perspectives

By actively supporting marginalized groups and giving voice to those who are affected by harmful norms, individuals can help shift societal attitudes. Supporting policies and practices that promote inclusion and equality can help create a more accepting environment for everyone.

Advocacy and Activism and Encouraging Change in Institutions

Individuals can become involved in advocacy work by supporting movements that seek to challenge harmful norms. Activism can take many forms, such as participating in protests, signing petitions, or using social media to spread awareness. When a large group of people speaks out against an issue, it can lead to significant societal change.

Challenging harmful norms isn’t just about individual actions—institutions like schools, workplaces, and governments play a role too. Individuals can push for change by advocating for policies that protect against discrimination, promote diversity, and support equality. For example, pushing for anti-bullying policies in schools or equal pay initiatives in the workplace can help shift norms toward more inclusive practices.

Patience and Persistence

Changing social norms takes time, and it requires persistence. Many harmful norms have been ingrained in society for years, so challenging them can be difficult. However, with consistent effort, small changes can lead to broader societal shifts.

Social norms are the unwritten rules and expectations that guide how people behave in society. They help maintain order and ensure that individuals interact in ways that are acceptable to the larger group. However, when social norms are broken, it can have various consequences, ranging from minor discomfort to serious social or legal repercussions.

Discomfort and Social Disapproval

One of the most immediate effects of breaking a social norm is that it causes discomfort or awkwardness, both for the person who violates the norm and for others around them. For example, if someone speaks too loudly in a quiet place, people around them may feel uncomfortable. The person who broke the norm may also feel out of place or embarrassed. This discomfort arises because society expects certain behaviors, and when they’re violated, it disrupts the usual flow of social interactions.

This video can explain it more:

In most cases, people respond to broken norms with disapproval. This could be a subtle eye roll, a raised eyebrow, or a more direct comment expressing dissatisfaction. Social disapproval is often a way for society to reinforce acceptable behavior and discourage actions that go against the group’s expectations.

Peer Pressure to Conform

In many cases, when someone breaks a social norm, others will encourage them to return to acceptable behavior. Peer pressure can be either positive or negative, but when norms are violated, people may use social pressure to ensure that the person conforms. For example, if someone tries to cut in line at a store, others in line might tell them to go to the back, reinforcing the idea that waiting your turn is the norm. This social pressure is a powerful tool for ensuring that norms are maintained, as people generally want to fit in with their social group and avoid being seen as an outsider or troublemaker.

Opportunities for Change

Interestingly, breaking social norms can sometimes lead to positive change. Throughout history, individuals who challenged norms, such as fighting for civil rights or women’s rights, were often seen as rule-breakers. However, their actions led to changes in social expectations and even the creation of new norms that benefit society. For example, the norm of racial segregation was broken by activists who advocated for equal rights, leading to a more inclusive and just society. When norms are broken in a way that highlights unfairness or injustice, it can spark social change and lead to the creation of new, better norms.

When social norms are broken, the consequences vary depending on the severity of the violation and the context. In most cases, there is discomfort, social disapproval, and pressure to conform. However, in more serious cases, breaking norms can lead to rejection, isolation, or even legal consequences. On the other hand, breaking certain norms in a thoughtful and purposeful way can challenge outdated practices and lead to positive change in society. Understanding social norms and their consequences is crucial for navigating the balance between following accepted behaviors and creating a society that evolves over time.

Social norms are the implicit rules that govern our behavior in society. They play an essential role in structuring our social interactions, by establishing expectations and behaviors deemed acceptable or unacceptable. These norms profoundly influence the way we think, react and behave in various social situations. They shape our daily lives and guide us, often without our even being aware of it.

The role of social norms in everyday interaction

Social norms directly influence our behavior when interacting with others. For example, in formal contexts such as business or ceremonies, we are expected to follow specific rules of politeness, such as greeting each other in a respectful manner, avoiding impolite gestures, and adopting appropriate language. These behaviors are largely dictated by social norms, which vary from group to group, but help to create an atmosphere of respect and cooperation. Similarly, in more informal environments, such as between friends, expectations are often less strict, but are nonetheless based on norms of mutual respect and equality.

This video can explain:

Social norms and behavioral conformity

Individuals generally conform to social norms out of a desire to belong and to avoid disapproval. This can take the form of behaviors such as following fashion, adhering to dominant beliefs, or adopting practices common in a given culture. Social pressure is a powerful influence, as conformity reinforces acceptance within a group. On the other hand, failure to comply with norms can lead to social sanctions such as isolation, criticism and even stigmatization. For example, respecting the norms of civility in a public place helps to avoid conflict and maintain social harmony.

Social norms and cultural values

Norms are often linked to a society’s cultural values, which vary according to time, religious beliefs or traditions. For example, in some cultures, hospitality and welcoming guests are paramount values, and behavior that does not respect these values may be perceived as inappropriate. Similarly, family-related norms, such as respect for elders or traditional roles, largely influence the way individuals interact within the home and in society at large. These cultural values are passed down from generation to generation, reinforcing the unity and continuity of a society.

Social norms play a fundamental role in regulating our behavior in society. They dictate our actions, define what is acceptable and help maintain a certain harmony within social groups. Their influence is omnipresent, from everyday interactions to the evolution of cultural and societal values. Although they may evolve, norms remain a key element in guaranteeing social order and stability in any society.

Social norms are rules or standards of behavior produced by the group, which often serve as a guide for individuals’ everyday actions. They also provide predictions about how others will act, and thus promote better coordination in social life.

What are social norms for? How do we integrate them?

Overall, social norms enable human beings to coexist harmoniously within the same society. They guide behavior in ambiguous situations, and facilitate interaction between group members, for example through norms of reciprocity, rules of good manners and so on. They also help to protect values or notions that are conducive to community life, such as the norm of wearing clothes in public, the norm of not throwing garbage on the ground, and norms of personal hygiene. Social norms are therefore an adaptive phenomenon that regulate social life and make it more harmonious.

This video can explain it more:

Of course, norms can vary according to the group to which one belongs, the culture and the generation! For example, the norms concerning marriage are very different for today’s generations than they were for our parents or grandparents, who married young and often for economic reasons. In the same way, the form, codes or meaning attributed to marriage will differ depending on whether you come from Poland, Colombia or Japan, or whether you come from a middle-class or working-class background.

What are the consequences of social norms?

Thus, the social norm can be seen as one of the many social influences on our individual behavior and judgments. Simply being aware of these norms will influence our behavior as much as our attitudes.

A relevant and typical example of the influence of social norms on individuals is what is known as conformism. To conform is to behave in accordance with the accepted norm. We set up behaviors so as not to deviate from these social norms, which tell us what is expected of us in the society in which we live. This phenomenon will be visible in our consumption patterns, in terms of our taste in music or fashion, for example. Depending on the group to which we belong, the norm will be to like this or that type of music, to have this or that style of dress, and so on. At first glance, it’s hard to imagine a young member of the traditionalist Catholic upper middle class listening to reggae. After that, anything is possible. But on the whole, social norms guide us and we will therefore tend to adopt the codes that are normal in our reference groups, to avoid conflict and preserve the group’s approval, to gain acceptance, because we have internalized these norms, and so on.

You can grow in your career by being a proficient writer and speaker. However, picking up a new language can be tough, annoying, and perhaps even impossible for professionals. There are ways to fit practical language-learning tips into your hectic schedules. Let’s examine five practical strategies for effortlessly incorporating language education into your professional life.

Micro-Learning Moments

Making time for extended language study sessions might be difficult amid the pressures of the working world. The micro-learning strategy breaks down language learning into short, focused sessions. Make use of brief breaks in your schedule, like standing in line or waiting for a meeting to begin. As a result of these short sessions, language learning becomes a consistent and doable task.

Language Apps Integration

Turn your downtime into valuable learning opportunities by taking advantage of the user-friendliness provided by language learning software. Language apps provide short, time-efficient lessons that you can access on the go, whether you’re driving, waiting for coffee, or taking a break. You can select learning French with Lutece Langue for any educational application that suits your learning style and fits your everyday schedule.

Using Podcasts and Audiobooks to Multitask

Maximize your multitasking abilities by integrating language acquisition into routine tasks such as working out or traveling. You can easily practice listening skills using language podcasts and audiobooks, which offer an immersive experience. Choose readings that are pertinent to your career goals to optimize learning enjoyment and productivity.

Networking in Different Tongues

Networking gatherings provide an excellent opportunity to demonstrate and hone your language abilities. Talk to coworkers or contacts in their mother tongues to show that you are knowledgeable of their culture and to forge closer bonds. Besides improving your language skills, multilingual networking makes you stand out in the increasingly international business world.

Go Abroad

Exposure to a foreign country is considered one of the most effective ways to learn a language. It is advisable to live with a host family who is a native speaker of the language. What’s more, if you’re working legally in France as an expatriate, you have the chance to enroll in a CPF French program. This will accelerate your language learning process because speaking in the target language is a requirement of the full immersion experience.

By following these five daily language learning guidelines, pros can effortlessly integrate language study into their busy lives. It’s easier than ever to become fluent in a new language. Take the first step now and see how your language abilities advance your career.

Social norms will therefore manifest themselves through our daily habits, through shared values or beliefs.

What are social norms for? How do we integrate them?

Overall, social norms allow human beings to coexist harmoniously within the same society. Indeed, they will guide behavior in ambiguous situations, facilitate interactions between group members, for example thanks to the norms of reciprocity, rules of good manners, etc. They will also make it possible to protect values or notions favorable to community life such as the norm of wearing clothes in public, the norm of not throwing waste on the ground, the norms in terms of personal hygiene, etc. Social norms would therefore be a phenomenon of adaptation making it possible to regulate and make social life harmonious.

This video can explain it more:

Social norms will be transmitted through socialization promptings from leaders, but also learning by observation or even social control norms are therefore perpetuated in various ways. For the first cases mentioned, socialization and incentives from governing institutions will be transmitted in interactions with authority figures explicitly with indications, or implicitly. Then, the observation of a person who performs a behavior can encourage us to repeat this behavior and therefore disseminate it to other people. This will be observational learning.

What consequences do social norms have?

Thus, the social norm can be perceived as one of the many influences of the social on our behaviors and our individual judgments. The simple fact of knowing these standards will therefore guide our behavior as much as our attitudes

An amusing example of the influence of social norms is what is called pluralistic ignorance otherwise known as pluralistic ignorance. What is this concept? you will tell me. This is an error that each individual is likely to make when judging the positions of plurality, of the group, in relation to a social norm. The idea is as follows: a person who does not approve of the norm of the group will still behave like the other members because he thinks that the others adhere to this norm. Because individuals think they are the only ones with a deviant opinion, they prefer to act like the majority, because they think that everyone approves of this norm except them. Thus, you may drink alcohol in quantity at a party, thinking that others are drinking because they approve of this norm.

For there to be exchange, coordination, cooperation between agents, there must be agreements between the people concerned; that is, a system of reciprocal expectations between people and their behavior. This conduct is a prerequisite in the current context where organizations are more oriented towards optimizing human capital. This optimization is a challenge that each organization strives to meet in achieving its objectives. However, taking up such a challenge is not an easy task, since each organization has within its individuals driven by convergent and divergent motives for action, and aiming for ends that do not always seem to go in the same direction as those organization.

The notions of social influence and leadership in social psychology

The demands for cooperation inherent in the functioning of all human organizations involve the phenomena of power, understood here as the ability of an individual to modify the behavior of another individual. The different ways of exercising power constitute what should be called social influence. For Edgar Morin, social influence is part of a process of interaction between the person who exercises power and the target of this power. Social influence aims to bring about change, to produce behaviors likely to allow an organization to achieve the objectives it has set for itself. It is possible to distinguish, according to Edgar Morin, four forms of social influence.

This video explain it more:

The first form of influence is normalization, which can be understood as a process of mutual adjustment between members of a group. It corresponds to a situation where the group is under construction and where the norms are to be invented. Through the cognitive processes of attribution, categorization and social comparison, individuals interact to reach a compromise. This implies for each member of the group to make concessions to converge towards agreements. Normalization can favor the status quo because it is based on a balance; but at the same time, it can be a lever for social change.

Leadership Styles

First, the democratic style in which the participation of all members of the group is encouraged. The leader plays the role of catalyst. It federates all the intelligences and puts them at the service of the objectives to be achieved. With the evolution of the company towards the model of human resources management, this style appears today as the most valued, since it is through it that potential finds a framework of erection and expression.

Next, the autocratic style favors the expression of the leader rather than that of the group. The leader dictates the conduct to be followed, he takes and assumes all the decisions. All forms of conflict remain latent since they are inhibited by the repressive power of the leader. Finally, the laissez-faire style is characterized by the leader’s passivity. He lets all intelligences express themselves and only plays the role of informant as to the means available.

The Standards of Practice are based on the fundamental social work concepts of group and highlight the specific contribution of social workers to this practice. The Standards of Practice were designed with a broader perspective than specific and more descriptive than prescriptive. They apply to adversity of problems and contexts of group practice including, among others, therapy, education; support, task and social action groups.

They also have their sources in: the history of social work groups, current practices and practice research. These standards of practice are therefore based on experiential knowledge, theories relating to the practice of group work and empirical studies. They emphasize the understanding and use of group processes and the ways in which members help each other to achieve the goals of the group and, if necessary, objectives specific to each of them

Overview of Standards of Practice

The values and knowledge of group social work practice are embedded in from the various perspectives of social work. Moreover, section I first presents values and knowledge fundamental to the practice of social work from band. Sections II to V specify the specific knowledge, tasks and skills relevant to each phase of the social work intervention process of group, from planning to completion. This structure is established from the premise that groups change and evolve over time. In the application of his tasks and responsibilities, the social worker must therefore demonstrate flexibility and suppleness.

This video explain it more:

For example, the actions of some workers social media allow members of a new group to begin work together; other actions allow members, who have already formed relationships, to get involved and to achieve the goal of the group. Thus, the nature of the responsibilities of the social worker changes according to the evolution of the group. The tasks associated with the different phases set out in these standards serve as a guide for practice. They are rooted in experiential knowledge, theory and research. However, since each group is different, professionals must adapt their interventions based on the range of standards of practice according to the needs of the group and its members.

Respect for people and their autonomy

As a principle of equality, every individual must be treated with respect and dignity. Within the group, no one should be privileged more than another, whether that person is the social worker, group member or agency director. So that everyone’s ideas are heard and considered, the social worker ensures that each of the members appreciates the contribution of the others. This principle is put forward, since by virtue of his status in the organization and his expertise, the worker social has an important influence. It is therefore necessary for him to exercise this influence with discernment.

It’s all about social norms! We can say that we have been immersed in it since we were very young and that our minds are steeped in it. For Sheriff, in 1965, social norms bring together all the rules and prescriptions relating to the way of perceiving, thinking, feeling and acting. They are scales of reference, or evaluation, which define a margin of conduct, attitude and opinion that is permissible and reprehensible.

For Newcomb, in 1970, a norm is the shared acceptance of a rule which is a prescription regarding how to perceive, think, feel and act. For Di Giaconda, in 1998, norms are thus ways of judging, or behaving, which are socially determined and shared.

The concept of social normes

As Nicole Dubois shows, can take on several meanings within the scientific literature in social psychology: a so-called prescriptive meaning and a so-called descriptive meaning. For Nicole Dubois, we can say that what is normative, a norm, is what conforms to the greatest number. This is the descriptive aspect of the concept, that is, what translates obedience to the rules.

The prescriptive aspect of the concept gives the idea that this conformity, or this obedience, is socially valid, desirable, desirable… So the norm adds a character of desirability and therefore remains a concept to be differentiated from other concepts that are: the law, rules, regulations, customs, customs and social habits, for example. So let’s retain the idea with a standard, there is something desirable, valid, desirable.

Features now a bit more social norm. Social norms come from a group, from a society. They are therefore the object of social learning, of social transmission. From then on, they come to be accepted and even desired by the majority of the members of the group and they tell us what should or should not be done. Details here that when a member of the group accepts a norm, he thinks he are on the side of the truth, whereas a norm in itself has no criterion of truth. A standard is absolutely not universal. It can vary independently of the group in which one is located. It can vary moreover from one group to another; it can also vary from one era to another.

We will now focus on the social function of the norm

A norm is considered to have the social function of guiding behavior and allowing the behavior of others to be predicted. There is therefore, thanks to the standards, a reduction in social confusion and uncertainty among individuals.

There is also, thanks to the norms, a stability of the group, an order, which allows the group to function and to avoid conflicts. Norms also ensure a certain harmony in the group and promote its cohesion. For example, in social psychology, it is common to differentiate between two types of norms.

Social influence or social pressure is the influence exerted by an individual, or by a group on each of its members, which results in the imposition of dominant norms of attitude and behavior. Emile Durkheim was the first sociologist to emphasize the force of the social on the individual.

This influence results in the modification of the behavior, attitudes, beliefs, opinions or feelings of an individual or group as a result of contact with another individual or group. To note such an influence effect, some relationship must exist between these entities. There are several types of social influences, called typologies of influence, such as conformity, innovation and submission to authority. There are also other phenomena that can be explained in terms of social influence, such as resistance, which is opposed to the preceding phenomena. Social influence covers a very broad field. The phenomena studied can be observed in everyday life.

The social norms

Social norms are defined as implicit or explicit rules that prescribe the appropriate behavior to adopt in society in specific situations. These norms are therefore an important source of influence because they prescribe to people how they should behave in order to avoid being categorized as “out of the norm”. The fear of being categorized as such creates a powerful form of influence that is found, for example, in conformity. Norms also regulate many different areas of daily life such as eating, leisure, personal space, time, interactions, etc. They vary not only culturally, but may also differ according to social status or gender. They vary not only culturally, but may also differ according to social status or gender.

This the type of social influence :

Social norms are influenced by culture and can therefore vary drastically from one country to another as well as touching on very diverse subjects such as nudity or the manner of greeting. For example, in France, nudity is strongly associated with the notion of modesty, whereas being naked is completely normal for a member of a Papuan tribe, who would risk being frowned upon if he were to wear clothes2.

Phenomena observed in social influence

The influence of the majority on the individual is called conformity. It is defined more precisely as a change in behavior or belief resulting from the real or imagined pressure of a majority on an individual or a minority of individuals.

Jacques-Philippe Leyens7 emphasizes that the influential majority can be quantitative or qualitative. The influential majority is quantitative when it is the important number of its members that gives it weight; it is qualitative when it is the level of competence, prestige or authority that legitimately rests in this majority.
